And be sure to vote for Reggaeton Niños on Radio Disney! You don't have to lie about your age, but it's fun! I'm 13 years old (and from Arizona), in keeping with Kiehl's overall impression of my blogging voice, which he claims is grossly misrepresentative of my non-blogging voice!

The Murmaids

Conspicuously absent: "Part of Your World" by you-know-who.

Just received the Aquamarine OST (trailer available here...looks pretty cute/harmless. Jojo's bigtime big screen debut!)

So far I'm not floored by this thang, despite some reserved praise amongst teen pop connoisseur/enthusiasts. Musings and thoughts as follows:

First of all, Teddy Geiger needs to stop making music pronto. One of his tracks just got PICKED on RD, and the thought that this guy might further infiltrate any musical channels of any kind is unpleasant. Although I guess I can't get THAT mad at the guy for being a no-hook milquetoast shitkicker. Jesse McCartney John Mayer he ain't. EDIT: OH! THIS IS THE "LOVE MONKEY" GUY!!! HATRED INTENSIFIED.

Second of all, a lot of this is pretty good, but overall the soundtrack is too littered with duds to be of any real interest. Of note (in a good way) are Courtney Jaye's "Can't Behave," and previously released (but still album highlight) "Summertime Guys," which until now I only had as a locked M4P file (oh, gee, I guess I can share it with everyone. For evaluation purposes...hm, I wonder how copy protected this recycled promo is...). Most of it sticks to bubblegum format with minor shades of confessional angst, although the boys are angstier than the girls, a definite plus.

The Jonas Brothers sound like chipmunk Jesse McCartney (Hanson, maybe) with a more frantic pop beat, and the first three tracks are passable going on decent. The highlight among them is probably swing-angst opener "One Original Thing" by Cheyenne Kimball: "Talk about yourself, but when the cameras are on you don't say nothin' at all..." hm, I'm getting an Esthero [mainstream pop]MAINSTREAM POP SUX[/mainstream pop] vibe. But the lyrics aren't that specific (or intelligible). Also, I think I did this EXACT honky-tonkish piano interlude during the Bumblebees set the other night.

Nikki Flores got nothin' on Nikki Cleary, although maybe they're not in direct competition. Emma Roberts: could it really be that hard to competently cover "Island in the Sun"? Awful. My first experience with stellastarr* leaves me feeling ambivalent. Bubblegum Interpol? "I want to suffer in your arms/ whooooa/ And when you're naked in the dark/ I want to see your face in the reflection of my bedroom stereo/ We'll take it slow" ...Bleah, who are these schmucks kidding?

Uh, Bodyrockers, you are scaring the children.

NO MORE CREEPY LECHEROUS-SOUNDING DUDES ON TWEEN SOUNDTRACKS, PLEASE.

ONLY PICK ONE (READ: TWO) AQUAMARINE OST TRACK, UNLESS YOU WANNA GET YER PANTS SUED OFF!

Cheyenne Kimball - 1 (Original) Thing (irony alert!)

Nikki Cleary - Summertime Guys

THIS CAME ON MY ITUNES AFTER I FINISHED LISTENING TO AQUAMARINE SO LET'S JUST ROLL WITH IT!!!!

Sssssssssskye Fffffffffffffriday

Test scene for the upcoming tour documentary Skye and I. Unfortunately, work on Crossing Arizona (with Skye Sweetnam) is scheduled to begin production in six months, and they have HD!!!!!

Congrats to Skye on a Juno Nomination!

Not a whole lot to report this Skye Friday. Album has been pushed back to August 15...sigh. Barbie Diaries writers have been announced, and as far as I can google, the only notable one in the bunch is Christy Carlson Romano, of "Even Stevens"/"Kim Possible" fame -- her version of "Note to Self" seems pretty good! Much better than the streamed track. (Martin Briley co-wrote "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and in a former life was in the UK psych band Mandrake Paddle Steamer, and Kathy Sommer, who co-wrote "Girl Most Likely To," seems to come from Broadway vocal arranging/direction.) Still wondering which song had that Cars vibe -- process of elimination points to "Girl Most Likely To." For posterity's sake, here are the writers, courtesy Clouded Senses:

The song "Real Life" was written by Martin Briley/Dana Calitri/Russ DeSalvo and the song "Girl Most Likely To" was written by Dana Calitri/Nina Ossoff/Kathy Sommer

And sticking with that site, I also got a minor 15-minutes-of-fame extension (I think I'm at 15:04 now!) in this provocative essay by Marc Hogan at Pitchfork. The quoted piece was too sarcastic and I'm not totally proud of most of it (chalk it up to bad time/place vibes and -- shock -- not enough research), although it made me laugh at the time. I'm just glad to see Skye get some coverage on the site (my pipe dream tour diary, "Skye and I," remains unrealized). But Marc, ya still forgot about THE VERONICAS! The mind boggles at the expansive epistemological possibilities!

A couple of Pandora musings before I go: indie affirmative action continues with Rogue Wave (come on, this song is TOTALLY inappropriate on my playlist!) while meanwhile I discover that Anneliese Van Der Pol is in fact included in the database, but can't be added to my preferences. Um, also, what's with this hair metal block? Really, Ratt?

OK, enough outta me. Happy Skye Friday, all.

Can't Get You (Both) Out of My Head...

Not t.A.T.u.

I've emailed a few people about this damn Veronicas album, and I really can't make heads or tails of it at this point. I was fairly well impressed with the full album initially, but repeat listens are frustrating...first and foremost, several of the ballads are plain AWFUL (like the "More Than Words"/Mr. Big/snooze knock-off, although I like the Little Emo Orchestra's touches on the two (?) tracks where they're featured, especially the pre-chorus "Mouth Shut"...cute name, too!). But beyond that, I find myself somewhat put off by what I've described as a compelling straddling of two worlds: confessional singer/songwriter/diarist mode and anonymous bubblegum ensemble mode.

I suppose these two ideas aren't mutually exclusive, but in practice they make my head spin...Aly and AJ wade in similar waters, except the individual personas are a bit more defined through pre-existing television image (we have to assume, of course, that many kids who purchase Into the Rush are at least aware of "Phil of the Future" or whatever, I mean there was a show insert in the album), and the self-expression is frequently ambiguous. Though Aly (or AJ) expresses solidarity with kidnapped children in "I Am One of Them," the song comes across as a (problematic) cautionary tale more than a vehicle for personal reflection. "I" could get kidnapped as easily as "you" could, says Aly (or AJ). WATCH OUT!

The Veronicas are far more risque, bordering on self-parody. They want to "spend the night with you." They always "thought you were gay." They're feeling "hungover" because they "drank too much." Heck, they even tried tobacco, maybe (don't tell Mom!). And yet a few tracks are very heartfelt, particularly the DioGuardi (co-)penned "Nobody Wins" -- which for the record is the only thing on the album that even approaches genuine, tongue-outta-cheek pathos, a la Ashlee (also DioGuardi's influence...PS, is Kara DioGuardi's Myspace fake? Kinda seems that way, but I really hope it isn't...).

Essentially my problem overall is an inconsistent tone, which is frustrating because MUSICALLY the album isn't particularly inconsistent (except, again, those ballads!! Let Kara take care of all of them, sign her up with Little Emo Strings!). My qualms seem to lie with the consistency of image, which is strange because the Veronicas are (half-) explicitly "manufactured," including the Archies-derived moniker. The consciously manufactured angle should make a problematic artist/performer image a nonissue (in the vein of Bratz as an example), but there's just enough songwriting "authenticity" (whatever that is...maybe I'm just describing a tendency to cling to the image-based non-musical standards?) to de-manufacture the twins. But come on, their fans can't even pronounce their last name! (The pronunciation of Origliasso depends, apparently, on whether or not the name is Italian or a derivation of Italian -- or something...I dunno, they talk about it here. Bleah, don't care for the board, either!)

And yet (and yet) in some of the novelty-inclined songs I've found some pathos, and in some of the ballads I've found bubblegum (like the one about poor schlub #3 (or #4-7) liking her (their) hair in a mess, as if they didn't spend an hour to get it looking like that! Total cheese-ball). Prime example is "Secret," which I took at first as misguided sarcasm bordering on homophobia. Listening more carefully, I've decided that this is actually the story of an obsessed male friend/fan who posed as a gay man to win trust so that he could then learn all of Veronica (and Veronica)'s secrets, including that age-old stumper, "what do the Veronicas look like without any clothes on?" (OK, this still ventures into some weird content issues...why is it perfectly OK for a gay man to watch Veronica and Veronica take their clothes off, as if he's not even in the room, but not a straight male confidant with no romantic interest? Even given the guy was lying, which is disturbing, the repeated emphasis on the fact Veronica(s) "always thought [he] was gay" seems misplaced). Anyway, bottom line: obsessive dude lied, Veronica(s) shared her (their) "secret"(s) on the basis of this lie, now she/they is/are mortified. This is a pretty disconcerting premise for such an upbeat song.

The bridging of two seemingly irreconcilible modes of pop writing (confessional performer persona vs. anonymous...again, maybe these aren't in total conflict, they just seem to be) is causing some majorly conflicted reactions to the album as a whole. For now I'll chicken out of a broader argument and say that the album is inconsistent and loses steam after song 5-6 or so, making it a close cigar with very little chance of having lasting impact over time. (I would still like to see them live, though.)

I'm interested in seeing how this album does commercially. Already the Veronicas have a bigger fanbase than, say, oh, I dunno, SKYE, who is as unified (aesthetically and in terms of persona) a teen pop artist as I've come across...which actually suggests to me that the Veronicas may be flash of the pan popular. There is about zero chance of kid crossover given the (slightly) mature (or maybe adolescent? Sophomoric? Dirty?) content, and maybe 50% chance of chart success...the similarities of "Everything I'm Not" (first US single) to "Since U Been Gone" won't help it in the Kelly Clarkson-exhausted Billboard charts, which means that by the time "4Ever" (first UK single) is released as a single stateside (this was a strange marketing decision...what's wrong with releasing the same single in the UK and the US simultaneously?) the Veronicas may be all but out for the count. Unlike, say, Ashlee, their performer image is too tenuous to guarantee them lasting success. Which teaches us, finally, that major public embarrassments sting like a bitch, but in 2006, may well foster a lasting and productive career. Work with that trauma, girlfriend, you still got my L.O.V.E.!

From a Space to a Home

I've never been a huge Myspace fan (less so now that the ol' Murdoch machine owns it), but I have been making new friends as of late. Let's meet a few of them!

The Beu Sisters

Disney compilation faves who I know next to nothing about (comp material seems to exceed their other stuff I've heard). The Myspace page reveals that they are from Florida, but seem to think they live in England or something.

"Danielle was only six years old when we first sang together – all five of us girls and Mum," recalls Jilaine

Huckapoo

Pixel Perfect vets go from anonymous to semi-anonymous. For the record, I like them better ANONYMOUS, both in theory and in practice. The provided tracks are bland dance/pop/rock. I would say this sounds kind of like very weak Hilary Duff, but I'm convinced that the new Hilary singles actually sound like a more bubblegum-friendly Killers, so I'll go with P!nk xerox with a hint of "Saved by the Bell" soundtrack. Hm, I kind of like "Crash the Party," though...

Huckapoo (unfortunately) have (two) names now.

♥ Lindsay Nyman [Joey Thunders] - Age 15

♥ Brittany Lahm [Twiggy Stardom] - Age 16

♥ Brooke Mori [PJ Bardot] - Age 14

♥ Jordan Price [Groovy Tuesday] - Age 16

♥ Brittney Segal [Angel Sparks] - Age 15

Which name is fake? PJ Bardot sounds more legit to me than Brooke Mori! Hm, Joey Ramone, Johnny Thunders, PJ Harvey, Brigitte Bardot? Also, Huckapoo is a self-described "indie" band.

Chrissy!

Weird. I found Chrissy while background-checking producers Dow Brain and Brian Young (Leslie Carter, LFO). This sounds very under-produced, and a lot is pretty cloying. Also, there's a sort of Tammy Faye thing going on with the make-up.

Pros: Name-checks Deeee-lite and "Zappa AND the Mothers of Invention," among like six thousand random other musical favorites. Very ADD taste (actually I'm skeptical if she really likes all these artists!), too bad it doesn't come through in the music.

Cons: The music is pretty rough. Admittedly these are demos, but...nah. "I Took Your Boyfriend" is about 1% as much fun as it needs to be. "Big" cuts out some of the abrasive wannabe punk 'tude, which works better for her.

Rose Falcon

Daughter of Nashville artist Billy Falcon, Rose Falcon's biggest claim to fame so far is "Up Up Up," a fantastic song from...Inspector Gadget, I think (as well as her debut, which is on its way!). One great novelty single, plus a few pretty damn decent pop country tunes (out comes the accent!), regular blog entries, and a funny, self-deprecating profile:

Hey guys its me! Yes the Up, Up ,Up girl - and yes I am still alive! Lol!! I guess I just needed some time to think and figure things out. I mean everyone does- right? It's just different when people are waiting for you to do so. There is alot of pressure- but I think I've finally got some new music that I am really excited about.

One of my favorite new friends! I'll be looking for her new album, apparently to be released later this year on Columbia.

More to follow. In the meantime you can visit my Myspace page (formerly the site for now-defunct webzine Basshead Media) and try to guess how many members of Jump5 are friends with me.

QuikPost

Caption: Coming from a family of famous entertainers (Nick and Aaron Carter), Leslie is ready to showcase her dream of being a songwriter and entertainer. With her unique and exciting brand of Punk/Rock/Pop, come witness Leslie’s Showcase live at the Lions Den in NYC. [Wright Management handled BSB and NSync]

I'm leaving for Boston for about a week tomorrow (no Skye Friday, sorry folks!), but there are a few follow-ups to recent posts that I thought I should get out of the way now:

1) MYSPACE PEEK INTO LESLIE CARTER'S NEW IMAGE AND THE BARBIE DIARIES

As I mentioned in the last post, I've been doing some Myspace googlin', and I found two very interesting little tidbits:

First, Leslie Carter (as in Nick & Aaron's "Like Wow" sister) has recorded NEW SONGS! After what was apparently an unceremonious breaking with her musical career at 13 (pretty sure she only recorded the "Like Wow" single and its B-side, "True," though I could be wrong about that. I'll upload the former when I get home maybe. EDIT: Song available below, limited time only!) This is much closer to pop-punk in the Skye screw-yer-fancy-producers style, though there's little to no info on how the songs were recorded on the site.

You can stream the new songs at Leslie Carter's Myspace.

Also, Christy Carlson Romano, the voice of Kim Possible, wrote one of the Barbie Diaries tracks, "Note to Self." I'm excited to hear this one...her stream-able songs are pretty good as post-Courtney Love pop rock, though she seems to have more success as a songwriter (maybe a good thing). No further info on who wrote/produced the other Barbie stuff, though I did discover that Barbie Hit Mix, currently advertised on the Barbie site, was co-produced by legendary bubblegummer and 2005 Gummy Award recipient Joey Levine!!! Did he have a hand in Barbie Diaries? Only time will tell...

Stream a couple of songs at Christy Carlson Romano's Myspace.

2) RADIO DISNEY! CONFORM! CONFORM!

A quick High School Musical update...I was right that an HSM song went to #1 on Radio Disney this week, but I underestimated B5's name recognition, which put their rendition of "Getcha Head in the Game" at the top (Jesse hung on to #2). Not too crazy about any of the HSM songs, but the idea of it breaking through to Billboard is really intriguing.

In other RD news, the younguns have "Picked" (as opposed to "Kicked") this week's Musical Mailbag option:

Thanks for voting on Reggaeton Niño's "Oye Mi Canto"! Here's how you voted: 58% Picked It 42% Kicked It

Reggaeton on RD? Crazy...does this mean that I can include Daddy Yankee in my slowly evolving teen pop encyclopedia project (more on that one later)? (Radio Disney Edit of "Gasolina": "That's So Clean-a"?)

3) THE VERONICAS ARE NOT IDENTICAL TWINS, ARE THEY?

How the hell do the Veronicas plan on saturating the market if they keep putting references to sex and alcohol in all of their best singles? I'd hate to see this one fail to take off in the way it probably deserves to because it's too damn clever for it's own good! I predict "Everything I'm Not" will make a very mild dent in the RD Top 30, somewhat paralleling its placement in the Billboard Top 40 (hovering near 30, peaking at 15-ish maybe? That may be a little optimistic at this point).

You ain't gonna live 4ever, girls, but couldn't he just...you know, hold hands with you (both?) tonight?

IMMINENT SORTA-COMEBACK SPECIAL!

Best Album of 2006!

Admittedly, it's the first new album I've heard this year. But I had no idea what kind of heavy duty production these gals had behind them. A portion of the credits:

1. Max Martin and Rami are both producing (this is their first major collaboration since 2002! Except for the 2003 Robyn album, which may or may not have been much of an equal joint effort).

2. Input from some of Avril's trusted producers (who aren't the Matrix). For the record, the Veronicas are so much better than Avril Lavigne that I can't even believe we still have to talk about this person anymore. Thanks for the angst, let's move on!

3. One song co-written by Kara DioGuardi. Which makes sense, because I finally got I Am Me in actual CD format, even though I ordered Autobiography!!!! WHAT THE HELL???

4. Some backing people from Kelly Clarkson's last album. I dunno, this is a quick run through Allmusic to see what the deal was. Downloading the rest of the album now, but "4Ever" and "Everything I'm Not" (I think US and UK single, respectively?) are pretty incredible.

5. Who wants to buy tickets to see the Veronicas play Buffalo tomorrow night? Anyone?

Stay tuned tomorrow for a nifty weekend feature...teen pop Myspace Mania! We'll see who's friended me by then...

EDIT: Um, just listened to "Secret," which contains the following lyrics (in the chorus! That's the last line of the song!)

You could write a million letters everyday confessing to me
That I am the girl of your dreams
But nobody ever asked me
I never looked at you that way
'Cause I always thought you were gay

Hm. Jury's out on that one. Overall the album's solid, but missing some element...maybe just lacking some charisma in the lead department, although I kind of like the identical twin gimmick -- not exactly "anonymous," but maybe...redundant? The album is varied enough not to get stale, but its also not scattered among totally random styles. Actually, some of this reminds me of a sharper studio version Noise from the Basement, which makes me both excited and nervous for Skye's new one.

Skye Friday Zombie Lovin'! ...Want a Bite?

So that's what it says...

A nice Barbie update on an otherwise flu-ridden Skye Friday. A new song from Barbie Diaries appeared on the site a week or two ago, available to stream:

Stream Skye Sweetnam - "This Is Me"

Or check out the video by clicking "See a Music Video!" here. (Ha, playing the camera like a pro...hey, did she really play guitar on this track? I'm guessing not. 3-D Barbie looks kinda funky, should have been live action: "The Skye Diaries.")

The song is...eh, kind of dull. Hopefully the other tracks will move away from self-help material and display more of Skye's sense of humor. But I don't know how much input she had in writing or producing this stuff. My guess is not much -- but if nothing else, this is a reminder that the girl can sing, which may be all she's really doing in this project, anyway.

My excitement dwindles as this thing keeps getting pushed back -- the new album will be out in mid-July and should pretty much bury this project. I'm hoping for a gem or two in the rest of the track list, though...there was like a two-second preview of another song elsewhere on the site, seemed kind of Cars synth-oriented.

Just found a great typo in an Amazon review of this film (which hasn't been released yet and already has several 1-star and 5-star reviews. Hmmm...):

Barbie's #2 wish on her wish list is to 'Go Out With Todd'. Now Todd is known as the "Hottest Goy in School".

I'll bet he is.

EDIT: The name of Barbie's band? Charmz. Sounds familiar, can't seem to place it...also, apparently "Kevin," the "investigative journalist" kid, has made 26 short films -- don't go to film school, Kevin, it's not too late to become an IP lawyer!!!

Happy Skye Friday, Barbie fiends (and congrats to Skye on a Daytime Emmy nomination, even though she's not credited).

EDIT 2: Wowie Zowie! Major website overhaul took place today! Also a new blog entry:

BANGERANG!

Hey you feisty, rockers and rollers!

It's you're lil' (or big-depending on you!) sister Skye here! As you can see my site got a facelift! With all the Barbie promotion going on, it was a good time to change it up! See that huge photo of my face?! Well my sister Aurora gets credit for taking that shot at my beautiful forest outside my house! It was so amazing outside I just had to do my own DIY photo shoot! Hope you like!

By the end of this month all have all my songs recorded and finished and in March we start mixing! EXCITING! So hold on to your hats, earmuffs or tiaras 'cause things are about to explode!

oxox Skye!

Only on a Skye Friday...

High School for Junior High Schoolers

Who knew that these kids would take over the world?

I suppose that after being emailed the NYT article about Disney's High School Musical project, I should post about this.

This week, "Breaking Free" from the soundtrack to the Disney film rose 82 places on the Billboard Hot 100 to No. 4, the biggest jump in history. Currently there are something like eight or ten songs from the film in the Top 100 singles.

This marks a few notable firsts and trends:

1. To my knowledge, this is the first time a single originating from Radio Disneyland actually hit big on Billboard before it did on Disney. This is due perhaps to a communications gap: while Billboard has recently included SoundScan results in their tabulations, Radio Disney still relies only on call-ins. That means that while "Breaking Free" has been voted #1 in the Top 3 on RD several days in a row, it has only crept up to something like the #23 spot in the website's Top 30 (though I would imagine that at local stations, "Breaking Free" and other songs have done better in Top 30 results...and that by next week, the song will be #1, with Crazy Frog right behind).

2. This may also be the first time that this kind of RD to Top 40 crossover, which is more common than you might think (recently: Hilary Duff, previously: Eiffel 65's "Blue" and Smashmouth's "All Star"), has split the intended performer credits between Disney (who credits "Breaking Free" to "Troy and Gabriella," the character names in the film, on both RD and at iTunes) and Billboard (who use the actors' names). Here, potentially, is an interesting example of the resistance of mainstream music channels to embrace legitimately manufactured pop.

The stigma of "manufactured" MUST be overcome if we want Disney to move ahead with their global teen pop saturation plan -- performer image is a major factor in keeping people who may secretly be inclined to like chart pop from fully embracing this music. This is why so few people attacking Ashlee Simpson's public persona have actually LISTENED to her albums. Oh, but "Since U Been Gone" is OK. Right. (Edit: why do I care about this hypothetical "closet chart pop" audience so much? Am I projecting here? Screw these theoretical people, HSM does just fine without em, am I right?)

Not to belabor the point, but could you imagine if the Archies had been formally credited as "Ron Dante" etc. in the charts? Actually, I can imagine it -- before the re-emergence of bubblegum-indebted pop in the mid to late nineties as teen pop (i.e. in the 1960s) it didn't MATTER whose name was on the damn song. One of my top five songs of all time, "Lightnin' Strikes," was performed by...anyone? Anyone? Lou Christie. I still have to look that up occassionally! (Can you imagine if he'd stuck with "Lugee Alfredo Giovanni Sacco"? Forget about it.) Point is, in this kind of music, the alleged author (or more accurately, the performing artist credited) does not need to be the selling point. So let's keep it at Troy and Gabriella, or whatever, and not turn all of these child actors into Hilary Duff, who maybe should have been promoted as Lizzie McGuire from the start! Or maybe Hilary is a special case.

3. Clearly, I need to purchase this album. Downloaded a few songs (including "Breaking Free") on iTunes and so far don't totally understand this phenomenon. It really does sound kind of like a high school musical! Or at least karaoke -- vocals pushed WAY forward, very faceless studio vibe (which is OK by me, just wouldn't expect it to do so well on the charts). (Hm, I remember making the observation a few years ago that SNL had turned into a series of high school musical sketches, where punchlines were replaced with awkward musical numbers for people who couldn't sing. Little did I know that what I then called a lack of ideas was a sea change!)

4. One of the HSM songs, "Stick to the Status Quo," is a cute play on high school stereotypes...Zeke, the jock, likes to bake (Jocks: "No no no! Stick to the status quo!"), Martha Cox, the brainiac, likes hip-hop (what are brainiacs supposed to listen to? They Might Be Giants? I bet they all listen to Sage Francis now), the skater dude plays the cello.

A few points about "Status Quo": first, this song is 4:28, complete with musical theater spoken word break-down pushing forward the plot (Gabriella, fretting about call-backs: "I can't have people staring at me, I really can't!" etc.), making it less than ideal as a single. But it's at #43 on the Hot 100.

Lots more to report on this, but it certainly supports the distinctly Disney direction that this blog has taken. Disney is the center of the teen pop universe, and it may soon become the center of the pop universe, period.

At any rate, I must see this movie. Like, now.

KILLER TUNE WHOSE ENJOYMENT IS NOT DEPENDENT ON THE NAME THAT PRECEDES THE SONG TITLE!

Teen Pop Mega Hyper Sugar Set, Jr.

A glaring ommission! D&C post later, enjoy this Pandora consolation prize...

NOT AVAILABLE FROM PANDORA: MAKE YOUR OWN TEEN POP MEGA HYPER SUGAR SET!

D&C - UGLY

The Pandora teen pop experiment hits a few snags. Rather than go track by track (there are well over a hundred songs now) I'll discuss emerging trends and major limitations of the program. Though not as major as I'd originally expected.

1. Boundaries

The most fascinating aspect of this project is to observe a semi-clinical process (most of this data is input by hand by a team of Pandora people, so it's not "computerized" in the strictest sense of the word) make both logical and counter-intuitive leaps into other genres from a pretty clearly teen pop base. The most popular "peripheral" genres seem to be mainstream R&B, cartoonish or lightweight rap (Ludacris, Black Eyed Peas, etc.), EMO, and some pop country (this may be due to additions like Miranda Lambert in my preferences).

Also interesting are some artists who have either been cited in scattered critical writing on teen pop or make sense (either working in the realm of teen pop currently or strong aesthetic link to current acts): the Go-Gos, Letters to Cleo, Ace of Base , Olivia Newton John.

2. New Finds

This is ostensibly the selling point of Pandora, and so far it's yielded some pretty good results. I mentioned Brie Larson and Katy Rose before. Others: Alecia Elliott (a leap from Deana Carter, who I hastily added without it being 100% appropriate), Beu Sisters (who apparently save their best material for Disney soundtracks), Kimberley Locke (Disneymania 3...so why aren't other artists from this comp available?), Cherie (decent find, produced by DioGuardi!), Kari Kimmel (OK song, toured with Jesse McCartney).

3. Singles =/= albums

One major problem is getting suggestions that come from albums that contain hit singles elsewhere. This leads to stuff like Alice Deejay's "Got to Get Away," a cheesy and monotonous song from the same source as "Better Off Alone," which I remember getting significant radio play several years ago.

4. Indie affirmative action.

For some reason, Pandora keeps spitting out indie that VERY CLEARLY has no reason being on my playlist. British Sea Power, New Pornographers ("Sing Me Spanish Techno"...OK, I can kind of see this, but not really), repeated PJ Harvey (which comes out of the Liz Phair/Courtney Love preferences, I guess, but I've heard "Sheela-Na-Gig" twice already!), A.C. Newman, and a song by Amy Ray called "Rural Faggot"...maybe she's referring to a bundle of sticks, but I feel like younguns plugging in Diana DeGarmo probably shouldn't be confronted with that (I should see who this person is). Other artists I was previously unaware of and might otherwise enjoy are similarly out of place.

5. Limited material

I've heard "Behind These Hazel Eyes" about 5 times (awesome) but I've also heard Aly and AJ's "Collapsed" about 5 times (not awesome). Limited selections (or increased probability of airplay) from artists like B*Witched, 3LW, and Fefe Dobson can make things tedious. (But why would "Collapsed" play instead of, say, "Rush" or "No One"? Confusing...)

OK, that's all for now, more news as events warrant.
